Motul ATF Dexron 6 is formulated to the Dexron VI standard, which is a meaningfully different fluid from the Dexron III it replaced. It is thinner and, more importantly, engineered to hold its viscosity and friction characteristics far longer in service, which is what allowed manufacturers to move to extended or lifetime fill intervals on later automatics. Use it where the gearbox specifically calls for Dexron VI. It can generally be used in place of earlier Dexron fluids, but the reverse is not true: filling a Dexron VI gearbox with a heavier Dexron III fluid changes both flow through the narrow control passages and clutch engagement behaviour. Follow the manufacturer’s checking procedure, as many Dexron VI boxes have no dipstick and must be levelled hot at a fill plug.
